That means that our total damage is 125% - the average of the two halves. That’s what ancients are the most weak to, so now that converted-to-lightning half of our hammer damage (with tier 5 gem) is dealing 130% damage while the non-converted half is still dealing the base 120% from before. But now let’s say we add a topaz (lightning) gem in there. When thinking about gems, we want to get that weapon damage percent as high as we can, but we have to do some extra math because conversion gems create subdivisions in the weapon damage that then have to be averaged with the non-converted portion.Ĭontinuing our hammer vs ancients example, with no gems, we have 120% damage on all of our damage with that hammer.

If we use a hammer against ancients, we now have 120% weapon damage, because hammers are strike damage and ancients are weak to that. Depending on enemy type and weapon type, we will have more or less than that.

Damage output is easily quantified as a percentage of base weapon damage.

Now let’s talk about how to evaluate the damage output of various gems. Opal and diamond are generally the best conditional damage gems as the others have conditions that are either hard to meet consistently (like moonstone), or are just mathematically underperforming in most scenarios (such as emerald and onyx, more on those later). Conditional damage gems are used to add more damage - with various conditions - to weapons that are already strong against that enemy type, since they don’t need help from damage type conversion. Conversion gems all follow the same format of changing x% (50% at top tier) of your weapon damage to an element type, and are used to compensate for suboptimal damage type matchups against an enemy type, allowing you to still deal reasonable damage with a weapon that would otherwise be weak for that enemy. Aside from carnelians and pearls with their niche uses for tanks and luck respectively, gems come in two general categories: conversion (such as ruby), or conditional damage (such as opal). Let’s start by understanding the two basic gem types. I usually opt for the guarantee of conversion gems at that 10% point since it’s just less effort to play effectively and I’m all about min/maxing on effort. If your weapon has 10% bonus damage against that enemy type, it becomes somewhat of a tie between conversion and conditional damage - at least assuming you’d meet your condition about 2/3 of the time - so choose between the consistent but smaller bonus of conversion, or the less consistent but larger bonus of conditional damage based on how much you think you could meet your chosen condition. If your weapon has a 15% or more bonus against the enemy type, use your preferred conditional damage gem (example: opal on hammer vs ancients). TL DR if you just want to know what’s best without the reasoning/math: if your weapon has a negative or neutral (0%) damage modifier against the enemy type you’ll be fighting, use a tier 5 conversion gem of the type that enemy is most weak to (example: topaz/lightning is best for GA vs ancients).

Healer secondary weapon can follow this guide, although diamond is still recommended if running support void gauntlet. Healers should ALWAYS run diamond on life staff because it's the only gem that boosts healing. This is focused on gems for damage, so DPS players or players doing solo content.

This is PvE focused, as PvP gem choice is less straightforward with more variables and less direct mathĮven in PvE, there is some subjectivity in the numbers based on how often you can/will meet conditional damage gem conditions. Sorry in advance for the length I put a TLDR near the beginning. I originally wrote this guide a few weeks ago for some company members after they mentioned wishing they had one, but I figure I may as well post it here as well in case someone finds it useful.
